Refinement Overview

Refining is the process of upgrading equipment to enhance its power. Refined gear provides additional stats and is identified by a plus sign (+) followed by a number (e.g., +7 Knife).

The primary NPC for refining is Hollgrehenn, who can be found in most major cities. Look for the anvil icon on the minimap.

Important Notes
  • ATK & MATK and P.ATK & S.MATK bonuses are visible in your status window (Alt+A). The "Bonus ATK & MATK (Over Safety)" is a hidden bonus and is not displayed.
  • "Over Safety" refers to refine levels attempted with Normal Ores that have a success chance below 100%.
  • All damage bonuses are cumulative.
  • Level 2 Armors and Level 5 Weapons will not break when failing a refine attempt below +10.
  • When refining gear to +10 and above without using a Blacksmith's Blessing, the item will be destroyed upon failure.

Armor Refine Bonuses

Refining armor (Body Armor, Garments, Footgear, Shields, and Headgears) provides a bonus to Hard DEF. The formula for this bonus is: Floor[(3 + Current Refine Level) / 4].

Additionally, Level 2 Armors receive a special bonus of +120% Hard DEF, plus an additional +2 RES and +2 MRES for every refine level.

Shadow Equipment

Shadow Equipment provides unique bonuses per refine level.

  • Shadow Weapons: +1 ATK & MATK per refine.
  • Other Shadow Gear: +10 Max HP per refine.
  • Minor base stats and bonuses from the item's description are also added.

Refinement Pity System

Each time a refinement attempt fails, a "pity" bonus is added to the success chance of the next attempt for the same equipment type, level, and refine level.

  • Pity Increase: The bonus is equal to 10% of the base success chance for refines up to +12, and 5% for refines above +12.
  • Reset: The pity bonus for a specific refine combination is reset to zero once an attempt is successful.
  • Stacking: You can have multiple pity bonuses active at once for different refine combinations (e.g., one for +5 Lv1 Armor, another for +8 Lv4 Weapon).
  • Display: The adjusted success chance (base chance + pity bonus) is shown in the refinement UI, rounded down.
Example:
  • You fail to refine a Lv 1 Armor from +5 to +6 (base chance of 70%). You gain a pity bonus of 10% of 70, which is +7%. Your next attempt to refine any Lv 1 Armor to +6 will have a 77% chance.
  • You then fail to refine a different Lv 1 Armor from +4 to +5 (base chance of 90%). You gain a pity bonus of 10% of 90, which is +9%. Your next attempt to refine any Lv 1 Armor to +5 will have a 99% chance.

  • Note on HD Bradium: When failing a +10 to +11 refine, there is a 90% chance the item stays at +10 and a 10% chance it becomes "Damaged." Damaged items can be repaired by Kafra or Repairmen NPCs for a fee.
